How Can I See the Fireworks at Mount Rushmore This Summer?
Back in 1998, the National Park Service organized the first public Independence Day fireworks show at Mount Rushmore National Memorial. Supported by private donations, the July 4th display was a huge hit, and it became an annual tradition. Tens of thousands of people from all over the world came to the Black Hills to take part in the celebration.
But after the show in 2009, officials decided to put the annual show on hold. The danger of forest fires had become an larger concern in the area, particularly with the increasing number of dead trees caused by a mountain pine beetle infestation. There were also worries about pollution after the USGS discovered unsafe levels of perchlorates in nearby water sources.
But this summer the fireworks are back. If you want to go see them, you’ll definitely need to do some advance planning. The number of people allowed at Mount Rushmore will be limited - not because of concerns about the COVID-19 pandemic, but because of the extra security required to accommodate a visit by President Donald Trump. If you’d like a ticket, you’ll need to enter a lottery at Recreate.gov. The lottery is open only until June 8th, so if you want a chance at attending, act quick! There’s a $1 nonrefundable fee to enter, and you’ll be notified by June 12th if you’re in.
If you don’t get a ticket, it may still be possible to see some of the fireworks from a distance - but if recent presidential visits are any guide, many nearby hilltops in the Black Hills National Forest are likely to be declared off-limits by the Secret Service. Your best bet is to connect with someone who owns property with a view. The closer to Keystone, the better off you’ll be - but it is possible to see the fireworks from as far away as Rapid City.
And if you don’t get a ticket or a good viewing spot, don’t despair! Mount Rushmore is an amazing experience any time of the year. It’s only a little more than an hour’s drive from the 1899 Inn through pine-clad canyons, and we’d love to host you on your next trip.
