Badlands Named One of Best Convertible Drives in U.S.
Spotted on Facebook this morning: Conde Nast Traveler says the Badlands Loop is one of the best drives in the country for convertibles (and motorcyclists get a special shout-out, too). The 31-mile loop through Badlands National Park is about a 90-minute drive from the 1899 Inn.
Actually, the inn is central to several super pretty drives. The Badlands are 90 minutes southeast. Devils Tower is about 80 minutes northwest. Iron Mountain Road, a byway that runs through Custer State Park to Mount Rushmore, is about 80 minutes straight south. Spearfish Canyon is about 20 minutes southwest. Bear Butte is 30 minutes due east.
That's why a lot of our guests use Deadwood as their basecamp for a Black Hills vacation. It's easy to explore Mount Rushmore and the southern Black Hills, then come back to Deadwood for drinks and dinner, then stay overnight. On day two, most people head out the next morning for Devils Tower and Bear Butte, then another overnight in Deadwood. Day three is a great time to head east for the Badlands.
